‘Celebrate Among the Living’
As I scan through the videos of WIL programs to prepare for the 25th anniversary screening, I can see what a huge impact Jushi had on WIL by just being there. She was a major presence in our community. Of course she would have been involved in every planning meeting, the presentation and loved the idea of this event. She had always wanted Women in Limbo to get back together.
Last April after first hearing of her death, I thought of editing a video tribute for Jushi from the WIL tapes. Then I realized the date happened to fall 25 years from the first WIL program in the Limbo Lounge. This event could be larger and bring the ’80’s East Village and ’90’s Knitting Factory WIL communities together. There’s an empty chair in the room now. But Jushi who had lost ‘too many friends’ in the last year reminded me in my last phone conversation before New Year’s to join her and “celebrate among the living.” And, so we did. And, so we will.
